I used to say a good stream can’t produce bad water, or a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. Yet it depends on what we mean by fruit or good stream. You see a good stream can produce grit and stone that breaks, moulds and shapes the river banks to produce its beauty and splendour. The same with fruit - is bad fruit more than what we call bad things like pain and suffering? Is bad fruit just selfish, ungodly character. In contrast can pain, suffering, even evil create something beautiful and can God use all these things for his Glory and our good? Can a good stream produce rocks and boulders to shape it into something beautiful. Can a good tree be pruned and chopped to produce good fruit? Is suffering needed for sanctification? Is there purpose in pain?
