Acts 23: Make Over
We live in a culture where appearances are everything. The way we look is so important that we will dye, wax, clip, cut, and make over.
We are deï¬ned by the way we dress, the way we talk or walk. People will even cross over the road if a certain looking person comes their way. We have all done it, pre-judged someone by the way they look, and yet the Kingdom of God looks at things completely differently...!

Rick Hoyt has competed in over 1000 races including 250 triathlons, and 75 marathons. This is pretty impressive, but even more so as he has been a quadriplegic from birth. Ricks father swims pulling his son 21/2 miles in a dinghy. He cycles 100 miles while rick sits in a seat on the front of the bike. He then transfers Rick to a wheel chair where he runs 26 miles completing the triathlon. On his own rick cannot even walk, but with the help of his father he competes alongside some of the strongest athletes. The book of Acts is just like the Story of Rick. Its a story about ordinary people and their extraordinary God. Luke wants us to see that a ragtag bunch of nobodies, when empowered by a supernatural God, can turn the world upside down! ...

If we are going to make a difference in this world, if we are going to make it through the storms of life, if we are going to leave a lasting legacy, which is more than wealth, property, or material goods, then its what we are made of on the inside that counts, not how physically or emotionally strong we are. It doesn't matter how tough we are, when the storm hits, will we make it to the other side? You don't have to talk to too many people, before you begin to hear about abuse, violence, addictions that have so gripped someones life that they are powerless to do anything about it. Life can throw a curve ball, and when it does how do we handle it? Do we run and hide, and grab hold of what vestiges of control we have, or do we come to the rock, that is bigger, stronger than us? We need to come to God in total dependence and reliance on him, and we will see that he always gets us through! ...

The cross only tells us about the price paid for sin and judgement, the resurrection teaches us how to live in the freedom it brings.The cruciï¬xion without the resurrection is like law without grace, they both make up the whole picture. Being a Christian isn’t always easy… If we truly want to live for Christ - it costs, we need perseverance, we need to be willing to let go of our life, and as Jesus said - we need to loose our life, if we want to truly find his. I have been asking myself - What Kind of Christians is the church producing today? Are we anything like the picture God had in mind? We want to portray the true gospel, and see real authentic Christians being disciples and looking to make other disciples, who are willing to come and be a living sacrifice and whose delight is Jesus....

What it is to be free. Over the centuries people have fought for freedom - freedom of speech, freedom to vote, freedom to be. I think of the great Christian William Wilberforce - who fought to ban slavery, so that men and woman could be free. But there is something greater at stake here, something bigger than the earthly struggles we face, and that is eternal salvation, eternal freedom - this is the reason Jesus came - to give us life, Jesus came to cut us off from the power of sin, so we could stand right before God forever free....

Weakness is not often seen as a positive thing. If you call someone weak it would be seen as an insult, a slight on someones character, as not very nice. Yet the bible encourages us to be weak, because it is in our weakness that God can be strong (2 Cor 12v10)....
