Being a Christian isn’t always easy… If we truly want to live for Christ - it costs, we need perseverance, we need to be willing to let go of our life, and as Jesus said - we need to loose our life, if we want to truly find his. I have been asking myself - What Kind of Christians is the church producing today? Are we anything like the picture God had in mind? We want to portray the true gospel, and see real authentic Christians being disciples and looking to make other disciples, who are willing to come and be a living sacrifice and whose delight is Jesus....

Have you ever gone though life wondering where God is? It might not be that is was particularly a bad time of life, but you just couldn’t really see what God was doing? This can often be the case both in the good, bad, but also normal parts of life. Have you ever then looked back over that time and as you have looked Suddenly God reveals to you what he was doing, and where he was? All of a sudden you see how God was fully in it?...

What it is to be free. Over the centuries people have fought for freedom - freedom of speech, freedom to vote, freedom to be. I think of the great Christian William Wilberforce - who fought to ban slavery, so that men and woman could be free. But there is something greater at stake here, something bigger than the earthly struggles we face, and that is eternal salvation, eternal freedom - this is the reason Jesus came - to give us life, Jesus came to cut us off from the power of sin, so we could stand right before God forever free....

Weakness is not often seen as a positive thing. If you call someone weak it would be seen as an insult, a slight on someones character, as not very nice. Yet the bible encourages us to be weak, because it is in our weakness that God can be strong (2 Cor 12v10)....

We live in our world where the concept of sin is skewed, in fact sin is probably not something someone outside the church even thinks about. Someone may think about right and wrong, they might think about morality, and consequence to our choices and actions, but sin, it is most cases an alien concept. In fact most views might be that if it isn’t hurting anyone, and it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad. And I would say this is the view of many people I meet. In fact many things that people pursue that they believe makes them happy and brings them life, it actually brings the opposite, they are just illusion of life, in the end these pursuits will only bring death. The wages that sin earns is death…...

How easy do you find it to do what you are told? Obedience is one of those words that isn’t always too popular - some of us don’t like the idea of being told what to do. We like to think we can make our own decisions, set our own destinies, be our own bosses. We will do something if we come up with the idea, but if someone else tells us, well that can be a different story. We like to know that we have our own mind, and we can pick and choose and even change it if thats what we feel is best. This independent kind of thinking is something that is big in our society today, but is this the way God actually wants us to be?...

Have you ever been in a crowded bar, or by the side of a very busy road, or around a load of screaming kids and tried to have a conversation? If it is really loud, it is almost impossible to hear what the other person says. In the same way life at times can be so busy, so noisy, that we can’t hear God speak to us, instead we begin to be carried along by the voice of the world, and miss what God is saying and doing at this time, and that is a dangerous place to to be. So how we can develop this vital skill of listening to God?...

Have you ever seen the book where’s Wally? Or played a game of spot the difference. Depending on the picture these can be easy to find, but at other times that can be really tricky, especially if the picture is super complex. The more detail there is in the picture, the more similarities there are, the more difficult it is to find Wally or see the differences. Life can sometimes be like this, so complex, so full of clutter that it’s hard to find Jesus in the midst of it all. Yet I truly believe Jesus is there, he is there in every part of our lives, both the good and the bad, the ups and the downs, through the triumphs and the tragedies, we just need to look and we will find him. ...

Sorry about the audio quality - we had a technical hitch... I was thinking about the concept of life, what is it? What does it actually mean to actually have life? If you look up the word it means the existence of an individual - to be alive means you exist, but why do you and I exist? Whats the point , the purpose? Does life just find a way, is it something that just cannot be contained, and so it just multiplies? And where does it come from, does it just self generate, is it eternal in some way? Then when we do have life or exist, what does it mean to live, what gives meaning purpose and fulfilment to life?  ...

Introduction:In 1666 London suffer a huge fire that devastated the city, leaving only 1/5th of the building standing. Although the Great Fire was a catastrophe, it did cleanse the city. The overcrowded and disease ridden streets were destroyed and a new London emerged. We see that although fire can be devastating, it can also bring cleansing, it can bring light, it can bring life, and as we turn to Jesus message on the mountain we see how he uses a similar analogy to show his followers what they should be like in the world.   Key Verse:You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5v13-16).   Some Thoughts:How can you burn brighter everyday with the love and power of Jesus. What dark places does God want you to shine your light into? What is preventing you from doing this and how can you overcome it as Salt and light to this world?  ...

Bless you has become quite a throw away phrase. Many people who do not believe or follow God, will often use this statement. They might say it when someone sneezes, or when they see a child do something cute - ah bless em, or the short hand phrase - bless. As Christians maybe we use this term quite a lot - God bless you… and many of us do actually mean it. Today we will see how God uses that phrase, and when God says it he means something profound and life changing....

I was moved by Chris Higham’s painting God gave him of the church coming together in the darkness and becoming a light set on a hill. Others last week shared the same testimony that this is what God had been speaking to them about. Then as I went about my work this week and chatted to people I saw that light - each one of us represented the light. As people speak to people, give them hope, take a meal, pray for them, bring a word of encouragement, or are at home interceding in prayer the light shines even brighter. A city on a hill truly can’t be hidden…...

Many people are fascinated by rainbows. Whenever a rainbow appears in the sky inevitably someone will comment on it, everybody seems to love them. Which is maybe why we talk about them, sing about them, write about them and maybe even go treasure hunting to see if there is a pot of gold at the end of one. However, the bible tells us there is something more important, more significant about rainbows and that is they were given to us as a sign from God of his covenant promise to us and so today I want us to once again discover something about the character of God....

Have you ever been caught off guard? - things you should have seen coming, but you were too fixated with your lives, your goals, yourselves? A family member or someone at college or school who was struggling for months, even years, suddenly crashes, but we didn’t see it as we were busy pursuing our dreams and goals. A friend who has hit financial problems, but our work was too pressing to notice. A work colleague whose marriage is on the rocks, but we were caught up planning our next holiday. There is a challenge in this busy, noisy, self consumed lives for us to stop, look outside of ourselves, and be aware of the situations around us. We need to become more God consumed then self consumed, we need to be more aware of what God is doing around us and less fixated on our goals, dreams, ambitions. God is on the move and we could so very easily miss it, the Question and title of today is - Are we Ready?...

This week we looked at the fall, human sin, depravity, the curse, and we will deal with the fact that God judges. It’s clear to see that something has gone terribly wrong. If you look at the world in the global cosmic scheme of things you can see the devastation and destruction. On the more micro level, you look at your own life, the people you know, the people you love and you see suffering, you see injustice, you see evil, you see death and sickness and mourning and loss and pain. Christian and non-Christian alike, people simply cannot accept that the way the world is, is the way that the world should be. Something has gone terribly wrong…...

We believe the Holy spirit is saying this is going to be a significant year - all the promises that God has spoken to us about are going to start to materialise - radical love, sharpening, deepening as we hunger after Jesus. Promises and words that God has spoken over us. There is going to be a move of His Spirit, and we need to catch it. There is going to be a rumbling of his presence and we are meant to be the epicentre. People who were once hard, hearts will crumble and soften. Territory that was out of reach, we will take over - new ground, new territories. To the degree we will submit in obedience to the will of God, will be to the degree that He moves. He wants to make us Sharper Still…  ...

Today we finished our trilogy by looking at the baptism of the Spirit - Is it for today, for everyone, a subsequent event or at conversion? Two weeks ago we saw the importance of repentance to restore intimacy - relationship with God. Last week the importance of Water Baptism - more than just a symbol, but a spiritual act that baptising us into christ, where our old life is dead and burred and we become alive in Jesus. Necessary in the process of Salvation. Today we look at Spirit Baptism - vital for the church and every believer. If you have ever struggled with seeing Gods power at work, it maybe because of this - you need a continuous baptism in the Spirit for powerful acts of service....

PLEASE NOTE:  There is some static on the audio. God is not a man that he should lie, which means we can trust in him because he is always faithful to who he is. If God promises something he will see it through, it might take longer than we think and may even work out differently from what we expected, but God is always faithful to His promises. This was shown in the praise of Jesus given hundreds of years before he came, but he still came and fulfilled all the promises about himself....

Spiritual Warfare is one of those areas that Christians often talk about but few fully understand. Many have heard about, but few engage with. For some it’s about screaming at the devil and rebuking everything that goes bump in the night. For others; Satan doesn’t exist so its not an issue. For many though it just doesn’t feature on our radar - we lead our lives through the situations we face and the decisions we make. We are naturally bound and the spiritual doesn’t feature from day to day. Yet the bible gives us a different picture - there is the physical and there is the natural and both exist in conjugation with each other, and the Spiritual although not seen with our physical eyes is more real than the natural. So we need to be a people who understand the Spiritual realm and how we are to wage war....

We all want to control, some of us to greater extent than others. The greater the fear, the greater the control; and there is a fine line between being organised, and getting stuff done, and walking in our gifting and Gods will and walking in control because we don’t trust Him. The problem is if we front trust God then the result will control due to fear, and fear stinks. One of the big areas this plays out in is when it comes to finance, as Martin Luther said Christians need their wallets saved…...

Have you ever had such an experience of God that it truly has changed you? That you really have encountered the living God, not just an emotion, not just because you thought you should, but God moved so powerful that something in you, in your life shifted and you were never the same again? I believe this is something God has for all of us, that God wants to totally wreck us that we can never be the same again. I believe God wants to move in such a way that he births a new found sense of holiness and purity. That we flee from sin and pursue righteousness - sanctification. John Wesley believed that sinlessness through sanctification of the Spirit was possible for the believer. When our lives are completely devoted to him, then sin does not reign in our mortal bodies (Romans 6v12). Others believe this is blasphemous and not possible and may lead to apathy - yet the bible continues to urge us on. Even Paul wrote in Philippians 3 that he has not attained it yet or was not already perfected (that was in resurrection life), but he presses on to make it his goal, his aim, just as Christ has made him his own. If this was not possible, then why press on to make it possible. You and I are temples of the Holy Spirit - justified people, who can have the purity and utter holiness of God because of the blood of Jesus purging us from all sin - it is now time we walk in such a privileged and high calling…...

We ended Chapter 2 last week talking about being the aroma of Christ and we pick up on a similar theme as Paul talks to the Corinthians about being letters, lights and clay jars. This is significant because Revival is not meant to just come in waves, it’s not just meant to come and go. Our love for God isn’t meant to wax and wane like the tide, the fire was never meant to go out, the well was never meant to run dry - we should burn with purity, overflow with power and love every day. Revival is the normal disposition of the Christian who pursues Jesus at the cost of laying down their life. Our lives are meant to be in a constant state of Revival - we are always meant to be letters, lights and clay jars…...

Christianity isn’t just a religion, it isn’t a concept or a list of moral standards.  It is a lifestyle, a way of life.  Second Corinthians challenges those who are followers of Jesus to examine every area of life through the lens of Jesus and His gospel.   In this letter Paul encourages us to have a Holy Spirit’s eye view of things; to understand who we are, to be generous and to serve God with all our strength even in the midst of suffering and persecution.  He reminds us that the Church is not just a social club, a place to get comfortable or where we stroke each other’s egos, but for the church to live is Christ and we are called to surrender to him and fight for His cause.  Followers of Jesus cannot compromise when it comes to living their lives for Jesus.   It is a Lifestyle of Christianity where we Live Life through Jesus and His gospel....

Do you know what a virus does? They spread, they multiply - bad things tend to spread easily. Where as anything, like a fit tree, that is worth while needs nurturing, pruning tending… So it is with our hearts. God will not use us with hard unforgiving and critical hearts. This will hinder our faith. We must repent, let it all go, bitterness, pain, resentment and let Gods love fill you and release faith in you. Our Vision for this year is ‘SHARPER’ how can we position ourselves so that we allow God and each other to Sharpen us until we reflect Jesus more. This isn’t always pleasant, and often we want to avoid things that that challenge our thinking or spark our insecurities, but it is necessary f we want to walk in the fulness God has for us. Spend some time reading the below and looking at the key verse: We visited Mars Hill whilst on holiday today. It was encouraging to hear the tougher parts of suffering being preached on - the parts that are so often missed out in the 'bless me' culture that can be so prevalent! Having read the media stories about the church building and the church's vision, then being there ourselves today, Ezekiel 37 wouldn't go away.  I felt God was saying that as He reconstructs and builds the 'skeleton' of your building, He will raise up and grow the 'tendons' and 'flesh' to fill it with His purposes, activities and ministries. His Holy Spirit's breath will breathe in even greater ways upon you all to grow and develop the army He is raising up Mars Hill Church to be in Teignmouth.  Thank you for blessing us this morning. ...

Lots of people say the christian journey is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, well that depends on who you are. For me it is a sprint, I have short time on this earth and I don’t want to waste it. I want to run this race with everything I have got for the good of others and the Glory of Jesus. A truth that has been burning in my heart for years now - we cannot afford to get comfortable, lazy, self consumed, distracted, fearful, or anything else that takes our eye off of Jesus. I used to say a good stream can’t produce bad water, or a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. Yet it depends on what we mean by fruit or good stream. You see a good stream can produce grit and stone that breaks, moulds and shapes the river banks to produce its beauty and splendour. The same with fruit - is bad fruit more than what we call bad things like pain and suffering? Is bad fruit just selfish, ungodly character. In contrast can pain, suffering, even evil create something beautiful and can God use all these things for his Glory and our good? Can a good stream produce rocks and boulders to shape it into something beautiful. Can a good tree be pruned and chopped to produce good fruit? Is suffering needed for sanctification? Is there purpose in pain?...

The study of angels is called angelology and interestingly there isn’t a huge amount of Christian literature out there on this. Introduction:Everything changed when the Holy Spirit came. No longer was the Holy spirit available just to a few people at certain times, there was the potential for everyone to be filled with the Holy Spirit, anyone who would receive Jesus and believe in his death and resurrection. The Holy spirit is God and for all that repent and ask, God comes and lives on the inside of us. This means we can live a free life that is lead by the Spirit and delighted by the heart of God.   Key Verse:I baptise you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”. (Matthew 3 v 11-12). Some Thoughts:What difference does the Holy Spirit make in your life? Did you give time to hear his voice speaking to you, leading and guiding you? What distractions make hearing him difficult and what can you do to tune your Spiritual ears in to hear? The verse above is sobering as it tells us of a time when it will be too late to choose Jesus and those that don’t will be lost in hell. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a passion for those that don’t know him, and then be bold in how you live your life and love others....

Not because Jesus hasn’t already done it and won the victory, but because he already has. But we can’t be silent, we cant be still, we cant just sit back and say everything is ok. The early followers believed Jesus would come back before they died - they would say to each other Maranatha - Jesus is coming soon. There was excitement, delight, wonder and worship. Israel have been hurt and hurt bad - basically their relatives are coming against them, rather than helping them. The Edomites were descendants of Esua, Jacobs twin, whom Israel descended from. They were to be friends and allies, yet Edom had got proud, they didn’t believe they needed anyone, and in their pride thought they were untouchable even by God, so they persecuted the Israelites. Last week we saw how pride starts in the heart and plays out in; your position, in what you have, over your relationships, over your knowledge/intellect, over your strength/abilities. We will now see more ways in which pride affects our life, and how humility is the option that brings Grace - Gods riches, blessings and freedom to our lives.  ...

Introduction:Israel have been hurt and hurt bad - basically their relatives are coming against them, rather than helping them. We will now see more ways in which pride affects our life, and how humility is the option that brings Grace - Gods riches, blessings and freedom to our lives.   Key Verse:But do not gloat over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of distress. (Obadiah v12) Some Thoughts:How can we live so that our fears and insecurities don’t lead to pride. What insecurities does God need to replace with his love and truth? How can we extend this love to people even those who wrong us, so that we even want what’s best for them?...

Pride comes before a fall - Proverbs 16v18, and even a fool! Pride is something that can cause a whole load of trouble, makes us self assured and self centred. It causes us to become arrogant, which is dangerous. This is something that God continually warns us of. So today we will see that God through the prophet obadiah addresses the issues of pride among the Edomites, the descendants of Esau, a man who through his pride gave up his brith right....

DNA is like the life source of living organism. DNA forms genes which in turn defines, shapes, and makes people what they are. DNA is meant to replicate, be passed on, create things in its image. As Christians we were and are made in the image of God - supernatural, spiritual DNA running through our bodies - made to reflect the likeness of God. So what is in our DNA?...

The bible uses lots of analogies when it comes to talking about Jesus and one of the most prolific one is a Shepherd. The Shepherds role is to protect and provide for his sheep. The bible tells us that Jesus is a Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. He wants to provide and protect us....

Have you ever been in a really dark place? Have you ever wondered if God really existed? Have you ever blamed God for stuff just not working out? Have you ever faced such a big mountain that you did not know how you was going to get passed it? Being a Christian as we saw last week, although is the best thing the world has the promise of hardship (1 Peter 1, 4). Peter Tells us not to be surprised when the trial comes. Why because trial produce faith and faith produces dependance and dependance produces perseverance perseverance that will enable you to move mountain. (2 Peter 1v6). Life throws curve balls, life has mountain and giants and moments of utter darkness and how do we navigate our way through them, how do we soo God in the midst of them and how to hold on and stand firm....

Key Verse:And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation. (Luke 22v40). Some Thoughts:The two great weapons of our warfare is the word of God and prayer - praying in and through the bible shifts something in us and also the things around us. So how easy do you find it to pray? What is prayer to you? How can you make more prayer more of a priority in your life?...

Its been a while since we have updated this section but so much as gone on over the months.  We have seen people saved, we have had testimoneis of healing (Backs, legs, bulimia, all kinds of things), we have seen people respond to the Holy Spirit as their lives are changed and set on fire for him.  We continue to go out on the streets, where we have the privleage of sharing Jesus with people and praying for them.  We have also now started a drop in facility for youth, a place they can be.  We are always humbled how God uses us - earthenware pots, with nothing special in and of ourselves, but containing the greatest treasure ever - Jesus....

The Greatest showman was very popular last year, and continues to be popular as famous artists bring out remixes of the various songs. But why was it so popular? Because it’s a great show and a great story. Everyone likes the underdog coming through, and everyone likes a good show in the process. Well the events of Easter is one of those stories - the underdog comes through, disaster turns to victory. Death gets defeated by life, sin a Saviour, Satan a redeemer, goodness overcomes evil - now that is truly the greatest show....

Key Verse:let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. (Luke 22v26). Simon, Simon, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. (Luke 22v31-32) Some Thoughts:Do you believe the statements of Jesus above or are you still proving yourself by your achievements. Do you believe the worlds lies of title, power, money, success is what make a person, or Jesus truth that to love, to serve, to lay down, to be the least is what makes you great? How can you replace the lies with truth? How does Jesus words to Simon Peter also comfort you in this journey? How is God using he bad situations to strengthen your faith?  ...

As we now close this letter to the Corinthian church, Paul answers one final question and that is the collection for the saints in Jerusalem and what they are supposed to do with finances. He then covers how various people are using their gifts generously for the good of the church, and then finishes by showing how we are to love each other by the way we great and treat each other. This section summarises the whole letter and that is - in and of ourselves we cannot achieve what God is asking of us - the bar is too high. We can only live this life through the Holy Spirit at work in us - less of us and more of him as he gives us the power and ability to look like Jesus....

If you knew today was your last day on this earth - what would you do? Who would you spend time with? How would you live it? We are told to live for today, you only have one life so live it? So what does that mean? How should we live this one life, should we live for today and forget tomorrow? We are encouraged to live for now and if we are to make plans it is for the next 5-10 years. Plan your education, your career, your holidays. The here and now becomes what we focus on, but what about after this life? What about not the temporal, but the eternal? What about when we die? How have you lived and are you ready to face what is on the other side? Paul says this in verse (v19), if this is the only life we have then we are to be pitied. He saw something more after the grave, something that was bigger, greater, more important. He encouraged us to live as though eternity is in our grasp. He encouraged us to beat our bodies in to submission, flee from sin, pursue Jesus, to make Jesus our own. He encouraged us that to live is Christ, our life should be Jesus, but to die is gain. He encourages us today, not to just live for today, not to just plan for the next 5-10 years, but to live and plan for eternity....

The gospel is under attack in our churches today, not necessarily from outside the church, but from within. The traditions that people have fought and died for are being lost and people are preferring a more open, inclusive less threatening gospel. But when ever did Jesus say the gospel was inclusive and non threatening. He said narrow and long is the way to eternal life. He said if you want to save your life you need to loose it. He said unless you pick up your cross and die you cant be a disciple. The gospel is a message of hope, of life, of healing of freedom, but it comes at the cost of self. We must never water down or minimise the gospel. Especially when it cost Jesus everything. It cost him becoming human, it cost him taking on the weight of every sin, it cost him his life. We must never water it down, but we must live and preach the gospel....

(1 Corinthians 15v1-2).   Some Thoughts:What is the gospel? How does it affect your life and the life of those around you? What does it mean by being saved - Spirit, Soul and Body? What is the process, and how can we let this gospel affect and infect our lives and everyone we come in contact with....

As a church we want to encourage both the prophets and the prophetic, so that we can hear God clearly in all areas of our life. We believe that a successful church will be one that appreciates the prophetic and is a place where prophets can develop in their ministry. Likewise we believe tongues is a gift given to the church that is underrated and often underused. We don't want people to feel left out or unloved or not chosen if you don't speak in tongues, but we do want to encourage everyone to speak to God in his language, and so its important to look at the place of both prophecy and Tongues in our lives and the life of the church....

We started this year by saying God has told us to expect the unexpected and this is where we will finish our vision series too. We are meant to be people with a nature like Elijah, with faith like Elijah and outcomes like Elijah, yet Elijah was only a shadow of what was to come, we have been called to do even greater things that Jesus - to walk in a supernatural faith that affects and infects all around us, we now have God on the inside everyday of our lives. The question is do we believe this? Is this our reality? Are we expecting the unexpected?...

Have you ever got out of the shower after it’s been on for a while and then gone over to the mirror and its all fogged up. So you try and wipe it, which improves the image you see, but it’s still a bit distorted. So it is with our view of God and life and ourselves. Doesn’t it feel at times that what we see or now is just unclear, blurred? Maybe everyone whether we know it or not are looking for something to make sense of this world and life. We are looking for our understanding to be sharper....
