If Jesus was heartbroken with suffering pain and grief?

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 4th September 2016 in If Jesus Series | If jesus, heartbreak, suffering, grief, pain, death
Jesus was not immune to suffering pain and grief. He knew what it was to lose a best friend to death. He knew what it was to be betrayed by those who love him the most. He knew what it was to be accused of something he didn’t do, to be persecuted as an impostor, to be both physically and verbally abused. Jesus experienced the lot and yet remained focused on the goal. He never gave up, he never became bitter, he never stopped loving, he always lived for others. So what can we learn from Jesus as we go through our own heartbreak, suffering, pain and grief?...

Ask Us Anything - What is the point of pain and suffering?

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 21st August 2019 in Religion & Spirituality | pain, sickness, suffering, death, hope, life, purpose, sanctification,Holy
I used to say a good stream can’t produce bad water, or a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. Yet it depends on what we mean by fruit or good stream. You see a good stream can produce grit and stone that breaks, moulds and shapes the river banks to produce its beauty and splendour. The same with fruit - is bad fruit more than what we call bad things like pain and suffering? Is bad fruit just selfish, ungodly character. In contrast can pain, suffering, even evil create something beautiful and can God use all these things for his Glory and our good? Can a good stream produce rocks and boulders to shape it into something beautiful. Can a good tree be pruned and...

Love to be Hated

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 24th April 2018 in Religion & Spirituality | love, hate, suffering, persecution, life, death, joy, hope
My daughter once said to me that she loved me to death - It got me thinking thats exactly how much God loves us. God want to love us until death - a pruning that produces death to everything that hinders us and holds us back. He wants to love us until there is death to our sin, our sickness, our insecurities, our fear. This will in turn cause us to love God and others. However, the paradox will be the more we love God, the more we will love people, the more we will be persecuted, and even hated for it....

Exodus 1: The Weak Made Strong

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 21st June 2015 in Exodus | Exodus, slavery, freedom
When God wants to be seen through his people there is absolutely nothing and nobody that can stop him. The word Exodus literally means exit or way out, and as we look at chapter one we see the beginning of a great escape of God's people from slavery into freedom, a forerunner of what Jesus would do for us all bringing us out of the slavery of sin. We will see that even in the midst of huge persecution and suffering Jesus can be seen in and through us. He is able to make us a blessing to others. He is even able to take the weak and make them strong…...

Strong Foundations - Genesis 3: The Fall

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 19th February 2020 in Religion & Spirituality | sin, faith, shalom, new, creation,Genesis
This week we looked at the fall, human sin, depravity, the curse, and we will deal with the fact that God judges. It’s clear to see that something has gone terribly wrong. If you look at the world in the global cosmic scheme of things you can see the devastation and destruction. On the more micro level, you look at your own life, the people you know, the people you love and you see suffering, you see injustice, you see evil, you see death and sickness and mourning and loss and pain. Christian and non-Christian alike, people simply cannot accept that the way the world is, is the way that the world should be. Something has gone terribly wrong…...
