Ask Us Anything - What is the point of pain and suffering?

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 21st August 2019 in Religion & Spirituality | pain, sickness, suffering, death, hope, life, purpose, sanctification,Holy
I used to say a good stream can’t produce bad water, or a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. Yet it depends on what we mean by fruit or good stream. You see a good stream can produce grit and stone that breaks, moulds and shapes the river banks to produce its beauty and splendour. The same with fruit - is bad fruit more than what we call bad things like pain and suffering? Is bad fruit just selfish, ungodly character. In contrast can pain, suffering, even evil create something beautiful and can God use all these things for his Glory and our good? Can a good stream produce rocks and boulders to shape it into something beautiful. Can a good tree be pruned and...

Pruning that produces Death

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 10th April 2018 in Religion & Spirituality | pruning, death, life, sacrifice, surrender, salvation, holy, sanctified
Most people who are gardeners know that pruning is beneficial for tree’s to produce new shoots and better fruit. But they also know that over pruning will send a tree into shock, will cause it to yield a poor amount of fruit and at worst kill it. This is the kind of pruning that I feel we need to subject too - a pruning that produces death. This is not so we don’t exist, but so we have life, so we can live, so we can go, so we can grow, so we can bear new fruit....

Lets Get Real #6 - Are you ready to die?

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 27th June 2017 in Religion & Spirituality | death, life, salvation,Jesus, wholeness, sacrifice
We are still in a Season of death. When I look around it looks like we are dying, but that is exactly what God wants, he wants us to die to ourselves. The stripping back has nothing to do with simplicity but death, its to do with making Jesus the focus not us or our preferences. Anyone that makes it about anything other than Jesus has got it wrong, and you will know by the fruit not what they say. We can all say its about Jesus but if it comes down to someone or something, if the focus gets put on someone, or something then the root is wrong. Jesus said unless a grain of what falls to the ground and dies, it cannot bear fruit (John 12 v 24-26)....

Leviticus 2 - Salt, Honey and Leaven

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 21st March 2017 in Religion & Spirituality | Salt,Honey,Leaven,Jesus,Covenant,Relationship, offering, sacrifice
To look like Jesus costs - not Just a little but a lot. To be a follower of Jesus, a disciple of Jesus, means giving up everything - our lives becoming living sacrifices, offerings poured out on the alter of worship to God.Israel understood this when they were given the instructions of how do deal with the grain, fruit and first fruit offerings. They new the importance of salt, honey and leaven, if they wanted to make a new, pure, and costly sacrifice to their God....

Adele Tickets and Christmas Trees

Posted by Mars Hill Blog on 13th December 2015 in General Topics | Christianity,Christmas Trees,Christmas,Adele Tickets,Pruning
Over these last few weeks God has been speaking significantly through many people. This was built upon in today’s Sunday service and so we would encourage as many as possible to apply what God has been saying. This has been a painful season of pruning as a church. This has nothing to do with numbers but to do with character: God is pruning us individually and corporately to produce His fruit in us. Pruning for a plant is quite brutal, and if not done in stages can kill it. In the same way God is pruning us, just a few branches at a time, for our good, to produce fruit, and not to harm us....
